What instructional opportunities can we help you address?

Transition to Virtual Learning

In the Fall of 2020, when schools were determining how to balance providing education with public health concerns, we facilitated a workshop for middle and high school teachers. The school district planned to use a hybrid teaching model for the first time (providing some instruction online and some in person) and the teachers needed training on both the transition to this model and best practices for its use. In the workshop we gave details on the seven main items to consider to effectively teach online along with how to determine what to teach online and what to teach in person.

Linking theory to practice

It is common that those teaching adults are experts in their subject area but a have minimal background in education. We facilitated a workshop for instructors of adult basic education, English language learning, and workforce development in which we introduced theories of adult learning. We then demonstrated how that theoretical information could be used to understand and improve on-the-ground techniques the instructors could immediately use.

Experiential learning

Experiential learning is a popular idea, but it can take time to understand how to use it effectively. We taught a 5-day residential workshop on experiential learning for adult educators. Participants included healthcare educators, military trainers, learning/development specialists,  corporate trainers, and  K12 instructional coaches. In this workshop we presented the five main tenets of experiential learning and spent the week experiencing the tenets as learners and practicing them as facilitators. At the end of the week the participants had a solid skill set to use in their own professional settings to ensure that the learning they provide is interactive, inclusive, and effective.

Diversity and inclusion

Conversations on topics of diversity and inclusion are necessary but can become overwhelming or difficult to manage. Yet, we understand that dialogue is a fundamental part of how we relate to others. We have conducted workshop sessions for educators in various settings on using mindfulness to help us engage in discourse, sit through discomfort, and reconsider what it means to have authentic dialogue. Mindfulness helps us focus and understand perspectives that are different from our own and allows for a deeper connection with ourselves and others. In our workshops, we utilize the culturally responsive teaching framework to inform our design and delivery to address the needs of diverse learners. Additionally, we have facilitated sessions on how to use this framework to enhance learner motivation.
